About the Run

The annual five mile run, which attracts an entry of some 500 runners, is organised by the Claygate Flower and Village Show Society. It is really the first event of the Flower Show which takes place the following Saturday.

The run follows a route which, apart from the final mile, is nearly all on footpaths on and around Arbrook Common. Newcomers to the run are surprised at the attractiveness of this countryside. Only moderate hills are encountered.

The runs starts and finishes at the Claygate recreation ground.

There are four age categories for each of male and female runners (as set out below) and the first three to finish in each class receive a trophy to retain. The winner in each class also gets awarded a cup to retain for a year. In addition there is a Family section pairing father/son, father/daughter, mother/son, mother/daughter. The pair with the lowest combined finishing places win the honour of being family champions and a dinner kindly donated by The Griffin pub in Common Road, Claygate.

There is a change this year in that the administration is going digital under the control of Sport Systems Limited, a company which manages many such events. Each runner will have attached to their shoe a chip that at the finish will automatically activate recording of their time and calculate the finishing position. The results for all classes and sections will be prepared automatically.

Again, members of Claygate Royals F.C. will also be eligible to compete in a separate class where awards will be given to the first three members of the club to finish.
